Matt,I'm not up on speaker design theory but I think the purpose of a port is to enhance response at the tuned frequency whereas the idea here is to absorb at the tuned frequency - effectively the opposite idea. I suspect a lot of the mechanics of the operation of both are similar in some respects.
Re securing - each unit (I built 4) consists of 3 pipes. The securing I mentioned is purely between pipes so that they are stable in relation to each other and so that the tripod formed by the ends of the radial bends will act as a base to support each unit as a freestanding unit. You can actually pick each unit up and move it around your room - they only weigh a few pounds each. At the moment the saddles aren't a tight fit on the tubes so they can move slightly and what happens is they start to move sideways at the top a bit and can then overbalance and fall over. I need to tighten the connections to achieve rigidity and hence stability - these things are around 5 foot tall, a bit over 2 inches deep (thickness of the pipe) and around 8 inches wide. At the base, the triangle formed by the bends is about 10 inches wide at the front and 5 inches deep front to back - a small support area for a 5 foot high construction. Hence the need to prevent the tubes moving in relation to each other.
I don't know what you mean by WAF approval but the devices don't only act as bass traps. The tubes also diffract and diffuse sound at higher frequencies and the idea is to place them so as to achieve maximum benefit from this also, so the ones flanking the speakers are placed between the first reflection point on the side wall and the listening position, for example. In wall placement would lose that benefit entirely and I suspect a normal bass trap design would be more effective as a dedicated bass trap. The beauty of these things as they act in different ways over a very wide frequency range and are very flexible in placement.
