Thanks Jim. I've never seen this in person before, or even read about it so I had no idea. This being true, I'm sure that there are many others who buy tubes that don't either. The company that I got these from sells more tubes to the music industry I believe. Most of these go into amp chassis' that mostly enclose the tubes. Of course, many music reproduction tube amps expose and display the tubes.
I'll be honest, I don't like the looks of it- just brings a sense of "uh oh, is that tube burning up, oh yeah it's normal," and sticks out like a sore thumb in amps that use 16 KT88s. Are black gettered tubes common? If anything, it'll be a conversation piece when people say "that tube looks like it's going out." I can explain that a black getter burst is more effective actually, and rare. Despite it's blah looks.
