This kind of broad generalization reveals the lack of merit of GEO's comment

I have heard many preamps, including Audible Illusions, Cary, Emotive, Bryston, First Sound, and *many* others. Cary and Emotive are both wonderful preamps and each will give you a somewhat different sound. I can understand someone saying that they think Cary has characteristics in a particular system that that person does not like or that the person wants emphasized a particular way. I really cannot understand a blanket, general statement as the one above about Cary. It seems to reveal anger and an absence of discernment. To say the entire Cary line of products is not even good hi-fi . . . that statement speaks for itself and if you are affected by it, it is your loss.

Both the Cary and Emotive lines are worth some time critically listening - particularly in your system or in one similar to yours. The Emotive Sira is one of the most lush (in a good way) and liquid pre-amps I have ever heard. It is intoxicating. Yet, I can understand Jack G's comment that that signature sound might become limiting after a time. You live in San Francisco and have access to stores with having the preamps in which you are interested. Listen for yourself. Each is worth the time.
