I worked there for a number of years - no kidding. Perhaps I actually demo'd them to you.
According to RV, they sounded better in our demo room than any of his other dealer's. Any speaker is going to benefit (in terms of imaging) from not having walls or other large, reflective, surfaces within several feet of the speakers. The drawback is there will be less bass reinforcement, which, depending on the speaker, may be a good or bad thing.
I installed literally hundred's of pairs of model 2s over the years, and while not all of the installations were 100% ideal, the speakers generally sounded good... and the customers' were happy.
MLs, on the other hand, can actually be even more forgiving since they are mostly a dipole radiator.
