Green Mountain Audio Europas for around $500. More transparent than the Vandersteens and more coherent than the M-L. The discontinuity between the woofer and the electrostatic panel on the Aerius is a deal breaker for me but that speaker has several other issues.The Europa won't play as deep as the 2Ce or move as much air but in every other regard I find it a superior speaker.
I would probably also pick used Magnepans in preference to those two if you have an appropriate amp. MG 2.5Rs (check replacement tweeter availability) can definitely be found for around $700 and if you got lucky you might find some 1.6QRs for not much over $700 (I've seen them go in the $750 - $850 range albeit with minor cosmetic issues).
You might find something in used ProAcs or Spendors too.
