>>trying to get closer to what his voice 'really' sounded like is a futile, even irrelevant, task<<Another factor is that we can't hear Elvis voice in the same social context as those lucky folks who heard Dewey Philips spin a test pressing of "That's All Right Mama" on a Saturday night R & B radio show nearly a half century ago. Many white people literally couldn't tell that Elvis wasn't black because of their prejudices and cultural assumptions. We can't hear the thunderous shock of what Sam Phillips called "a white man with the black sound".
If you ever get a chance you must visit Graceland. It can be enjoyed on many levels, but for me the most affecting moment - and one that's probably unintended by the Keepers of Graceland - came after going through the house. After seeing one appallingly ugly room after another that emphasize the later sad freak show aspect of Elvis, you go into what's called the trophy building. The first thing you see thre is a set of the Sun 78s, and all of a sudden all that glitter jumpsuit / Dr. Nick / red velvet / bad taste crap is blown away by the reminder that the real reason Elvis is immortal is those half dozen revolutionary records that changed everything.
