I have quite a few Elvis LP's left over from my childhood days as well. All are issued in the 70's, so sadly I've never heard the early 60's pressings. I recall mom playing these things non-stop on a late 60's Magnavox console. Out of several, the only one that actually sounds worthy of The King's voice is an early 70's re-issue of his early 60's spiritual LP "His Hand in Mine". Such a fantastic and natural recording, and his heart was really into these old songs. The backing band and the Jordenairs (sp?) vocals are great too. This pressing is on the dreaded RCA "Dynaflex", but it still sounds fantastic.Sadly, all the rest in my collection basically suck. The original Aloha From Hawaii on quad vinyl is OK, but Elvis was getting past his prime fast.
There's a great book I've just started reading that chronicals just about every second Elvis ever spent in the studio. It came out early this year or last, and is written in amazing detail by the current producer of his CD re-issues (I'm at work and can't recall his name. Jorgenson, I think). I HIGHLY recomend this book even if you're a passing Elvis fan.
