I don't like 'characterizing' too much, you either like or not. Pretty simple eh? Too bad he died that way.
There are BASS players that took up all kinds of different 2 hand finger styles too, Jaco, Sklar, Clarke, Mingus. I had a Teacher years ago who plays Bass with B.D. Lenz and goes by the name James Rosacha. Still touring but haven't heard from him in quite a while. I got him his first Spector Bass as a Kramer dealer, one of the best.
I cited more generally well known examples because when I saw RTF in NYC many years ago it was like being high. People were smoking of course so maybe it was second hand smoke but boy, my eyes lit up
