Why spend $1500 on a receiver?
I found myself asking that same question. I had an older Yamaha receiver that I liked and the sound was quite good. (If you like Yamaha, I do) but no hdmi.
I decided it was time to buy new speakers and had an idea what I wanted, that plan went to hell when I auditioned some magnepan's.
I wanted to go Yamaha but power was needed, read pre outs, also I wanted hdmi 1.4 of course. I went with a previously enjoyed RX-V667 for only $240, an Emotiva XPA-3 hooked to the pre out powers the Maggie fronts and center.
The sound is awesome, are there setups that will let you brag more, of course, but I'm happy with it and that's the bottom line.
