The reproduction of music is as much about the delivery of the data as the data itself. I hope we can begin with the assumption that the compressed signal of the lossless formats can be reconstructed completely bit for bit.It would seem that any cost reduction benefits from compressing the signal are negated by the added resources required, however, to deliver an identical data stream. Windows offers lossless compression of your data drives. The compromise is the same - increased capacity vs. lowered transfer rate. For those who may disagree, try it on your own computer.
