hello -i recently heard the gaincard at the NY HE show. it sucked for the money. there is no way this little thing sounds like an SET. the circuit it uses is simply an opamp + a few boutique parts. to pay that much for a really nice aluminum case is a waste of money.
let me clarify - this little amp would be ok if it sold for a few hundred dollars. that's it. the price they charge for a measly power supply and a total of 9 parts is silly. i have no idea what the fuss is about. the gaincard has to be cable snake oil taken to the level of electronics. speaking with kimura-san at the show (who happens to be a very nice man) left me unimpressed with the design. i left there amazed at the fact that this little bass-less amp could cost so much money.
i just built a wannabe gaincard with about $100 in parts minus the case. it sounds good enough to drive a cheap pair of nht's for my computer. that's it. it ain't no stinkin tube amp. it does NOT sound like an SET amp.
as per your question and depending on your room and tastes, you will most likely need somewhat efficient speakers with a stable impedence.
good day,
chiggy
