Hey Paul,The store bought ones I have, have 2 seperate runs of the ground wire, and that is what I would recommend.
BUT, I think that you sould look at another solution if you are planning to hook up your system to your computer.
There are higher quality sound cards now available that are not too expensive, and can rival a lot of cdps with much more convience.
Look at cards like these ones in the $200 range that will significanly improve the sound over stock cards and have standard connections like RCAs or balanced outputs:
