Making a 3.5 to RCA, cable; when to split?

I recently ordered a few RCA connectors and 3.5mm jacks to connect my sound card to my audio system. My question is, should I have a majority of the cable length split to the left and right with their individual grounds, or split it as close to the RCA connections as possible. I other words, you're looking at a "Y" cable, shoudl the two legs be the long portion, or the combined leg? I'm thinking the combined leg should be the longest as it would pick up less potential interference because of the single ground.

Thanks!
Paul
