I have a class A preamp coming my way, it has a philipps 8x4 stock tube rectifier, how good is this tube? I thought about buying Tung-Sol or Raytheon because these are highly recommended, any opinions?

Tung Sol 6X4WA works for me, best I have tried so far.

Hi,I have used RCA, Tung-Sol, Raytheon, and just recently Mullard that Jim McShane has. All are very good 6X4's to use. All with great results.
I am also using a Mullard 6X4 I bought from Jim McShane with great results.

Shakey,Now, this is going to sound real funky, but... Different Mullard or TungSol 6X4 (even the same vintage) will give the unit a completely different tone.
I've rolled 6X4's in unit where TungSol's sounded better than Mullards, and vice-versa. And there was no correlation to the tube tester results. Even, different TungSol's sounded different.
Try finding a source for those GEC's. You may be surprised at the tone.

Fjr,For some oddball reason, the GEC CV4005 made 6X4 or TungSol 6X4W seem to work out the best, tone-wise.

I have a sylvania 6X4W, ruggedised version. It has thick glass, large plates and extra support rods. I use it in a guitar amp, sounds great and looks like it will last a long time.

S,
Nah its a DIY SE EL84 geetar amp. Loosely based on the AX84 project. sounds pretty good and has a decent amount of power too!

S,That is a great little project amp. What kinda EL84 are you running? I kinda like the tone of the 6V6GT, in single-ended form.
And Weber 8-inch speakers REALLY sound great, in these amps.
