that thinks, while there may be a slight similarity, there is no basis to claim My Sweet Lord is an out and out copy, like was done. I keep humming the tunes in my head and just don't get it. There are a lot more songs out there that more closely mimic previus ones.
But, maybe I'm all wrong; it doesn't matter at all now. I was just thinkin'.....

Follow Ups:
I definely hear it. It's in the verses AND the changes. It might be in a different key, but it's the same musical progression. If you were to play the chord progression on a guitar you could easily sing BOTH lyrics to it.Not sure how they make a judgement about how much similarity makes a "copy", but those two songs had too much in common. I don't think it was an intentional thing. You have a lot of songs that sound alike.
Like the other posts, you hear it every day. Just this morning, I'm listening to SOMAFM.com -(Indypoprocks) when up plays The Decemberists - "Angel Won't You Call Me". The repeating intro guitar plays the EXACT lines of the Traveling Wilbury's "Handle Me With Care". And there's even a 12 string guitar in the song.
Now does playing that intro constitute a case? The music deviates from said song in other parts of it. I think if a song has a certain amount of content, let's say approx. 3/4 of the song, you could have a case. But I'm sure a lot of factors come into play, such as if that song had national airplay etc...
Harrison had a bit of a rep for this, at least according to George Martin, who mentioned the similarities between Taxman and Batman and between Something.. and a similar tune done by James Taylor when he was with Apple.
In the Way She Moves?

similar to Something In the way She Moves by Taylor. By the way, the version of Taylor's SITWSM off his last Greatest Hits compilation is a different recording than the album version and is quite possibly one of the finest recorded songs I have ever heard. I play it on my Quad 57's all the time and it is spine tingling.

Someone mentioned the similarity between James Taylor's song and Harrisn's Something. If you want to hear an out and out ripoff then listen to Taylor's song(coincidentally recorded after he signed with Apple) and Harrisn's Something. Harrison absolutely STOLE Taylor's song. The first time I heard Taylor's song was long after I had heard Something and I was shocked at the similarities. Of course Taylor recorded his song before Harrison's. The most obvious ripoff I have ever heard.

I'm surprised I'm the first to tell youi that not only are tghose songs similar, but Harrison was sued over the similarity and lost. I dont know what he had to pay.He eventually wrote a song about it called "Sue Me,Sue You Blues".

Actually the song Sue Me, Sue You Blues was about the various lawsuits the Beatles had filed against each other Apple Corp and Allen Klein. I beleve the lawsuit over the songs occurred after Living In A Material World was released.
Lord on the radio, I can' detect a similarity enough to justify a winning lawsuit. Really, does anyone think Harrison spent much time listening to, and retaining the tune to He's So Fine? Not even subconsciously, in my view.

It is perhaps that we’re so inundated with so many eager and willing musicians these days that this sort of thing is bound to happen. The tunes would finally run out. Recycling tunes will be the thing in the future. You can blame this on the American Idol.

Try blaming it on sampling.

and then listen to "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty

Green Day's "Warning" is (musically at least) very close to the Kink's "Picture Book". and then they do it again on a few of the new songs on American Idiot (the new single, of which i can't remember the name, fools me at first in thinking it's "Bullet The Blue Sky"). don't get me wrong, i really like GD, but i am always a bit surprised that some of their recent songs are sounding just a tad familiar of something else.anyways, Green Day are hardly the worst plagerists out there. at least their lyrics are biting!
The first thing that came to mind when I heard Danny California was that Athony's lead vocal sounds a lot like the one he did on Californication. Dude still can't sing but I guess he's found his nitch.Nice guitar sounds by John F though, as always.....
and they said Tom Petty had not decided whether to sue or at least had no comment.IMO, Dani California is far better than anything Tom Petty ever put out anyway.
And the guitar riff is straight out of Purple Haze. So maybe Hendrix estate can sue as well.
But I support RHCP. This is a great album, sprawling, pure pop and old fashioned analog sound. If they are blatant about the influences they use, at least they put them to good use.
I've always thought the same thing. it's funny how over 30 years later with even more lawyers and lawsuits in today's society that there isn't more claims of plagerism in current pop music. you're right in saying there are alot more songs out there that sound like other songs than the 2 that you mention. i've always scratched my head over that one too.
Which was ridiculous on multiple levels:1. It was an homage to HIM.
2. It was a massive hit and over 20 years old before they decided to pursue an action.
3. Your suing over a single chord boogie and grunts.
