Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

1 more point: it's relatively easy to copy the circuitry

216.232.79.145

off a kit (likewise with OEM factory stuff) but then it's difficult to copy the transformers(Tango, Tamura, Magnequest), esp. SE air-gapped ones.

Counterpoint: Many factory unit manufacturers had their designs copied off of some old cookbooks. In other words, I do not see the point.

My last 2 cents:

(1)factory units are there for the mass market.

(2) DIY kits are there for folks outside of the common mass market realm.

(3) Most DIY kits offer best performance/cost ratio because of their inherent deficienciy in the lacking of brand name. In other words, they would have to "excel" the factory units in some ways, either to make their kit priced cheap or excel the factory ones in terms of performace, or both.

(4)Factory units have to go through all the channels (distributors, middleman, etc.) before they reach buyer's hands. In order for factory units to be competitive in the mass market, they would have to resort to keeping cost down somehow.

Bottomline: Kit has it's own market and so are the factory units. You cannot compare performance based on their pricing or marketing position.

Cheers,

Quest
