While it's true that a trans may be a custom unit in a finished product, the most significant design parameter a manufacturer optimizes on a custom unit is cost.If you choose a simple circuit and good parts, in most cases you'll outdo a finished product for the same expenditure, especially if you can do all the chassis work yourself. The reason not to DIY is not because you're afraid you aren't smart enough to build a good amp, but simply because you don't want to put in the time and effort.
