The money saving from DIY really comes from the direct-buy from the manufacturer, no commercial ad, and low overhead (long waiting time). There are direct-buy places which can save you many of the expenses above too, in which case the only cash you save is essensially the cost of assembling.I think it's a mistake , at least in a short term, to think that you have the freedom to tweak for sound better to your taste by doing DIY. If you aren't familiar with the whole SET design thing and the particular circuit, chances are you aren't going to find a better set of parameters. Don't count too much on the difference between the "designer's taste" and "your taste".
There's a joy and knowledge gained from DIY, which may be helpful in a long term.
I think the big advantage of a big and hence expensive manufacturer is really in the R&D. But it really depends on who's doing the R&D. I think it'd be ideal if you could find a small, direct-buy manufacturer who seems good and with a well-tested circuit, which has gone over several revisions.
