I believe it is only about using a more convenient data input format. 32 bits integrate easier than 24 bits, since many interfaces run at 32bits. Plus adding extra 8bits to sigma/delta converters costs nothing, they are way below the noise anyways. But I would not be surprised if internally they used regular 24bit circuits, nobody can tell from the outside anyways.
