Hi,
The Orpheus can't do hardware upsampling from the PC unless you feed one of the spdif inputs.
The D to A performance of the Orpheus is really quite different than the Lynx 2B. The Lynx can have some glare in the upper mids, and thinness through the midrange which simply doesn't exist coming through the Orpheus.
A few weeks ago I spent some time listening to the Orpheus compared with one of my friends ultra high-end analog rigs. As far as I could tell, the superiority of each format really came down to the mastering of the individual releases. There was one record which I liked better than the same release of 24 / 96 pcm, but in all other cases we both thought the Orpheus sounded better than the analog. Of course, our tests were limited to recordings that we had in both digital and analog formats.
I'll be going back over there on Wednesday this week, so maybe we can try digitizing the best of the analog at high sampling rates to see if I can discern some of the qualities you wrote of.
Alan
