RE: You Guys Need To Quit

"This is the typical fallacious and naive understanding of sampling theory that one sees repeated ad nauseum on audio boards."

It's a waste of time to argue theory to people who won't make the necessary effort (or lack the mental capacity) to understand the mathematics. Furthermore, even if you understand the mathematics behind the sampling theorem, as a few on this forum do, the sampling theorem makes an assumption (band limited signal) which can not apply in the real world to any recording of a musical performance. (There are no bandlimited signals of finite duration except the zero signal. Realizing this involves more mathematics.) In practice the sampling theorem is only an approximation. The debate is not over mathematics, it is over implementation and psycho-acoustics. An analog signal is also an approximation. There will always be some amount of linear and non linear distortion and masking noise in any analog storage medium. There is no infinite resolution in an analog either.

In the end, it comes down to what you prefer. However, if you mix technologies you will end up with some combination of the worst aspects of both. The best sound is going to be found on either (a) a direct tape copy of a master tape, (b) a direct disk LP, or (c) a high resolution digital recording which is a bit perfect copy of the original session recording. Unfortunately, this implies that the original performance by the musicians was just right and that the microphones captured the sound perfectly. This purist approach will faithfully record what the microphones captured, even if it is musical or sonic junk.
