RE: How close to vinyl quality can we get with PCM digital using a computer at home?

Digital can rival vinyle but it takes a LOT of effort and is expensive.

My dCS chain does not have the noise of vinyl and is perahps better by way of image solidity (no phase shifts). It is as smooth but not as emotive. Here I am talking about the need to dejitter, to upsample correctly, and to be very careful about separating digital and analog power supplies. I use 2 separate Accuphase regenerators.

SACD played back digitally sounds realistic; does not have the sheen of pcm which you refer to, and is quite easy to set up with a good universal player. It has the advantage of having quite a few good well priced dsd classic and pop new issues, not regurgitated old material or expensive 24/192 recordings. It has a balance between hf and lf that pcm does not have but imaging is less 'etched'.

I play all formats on my system and use only a balanced class a chain with passive attenuator. Digital cabling and impedance matching are all important also. Computer outputs have to be very carefully set up and dejittered to get to rival analog or high end boxes. Digital 'silence' in suppressing emi (from mains, satellite, boxes etc) is very impotant.

The whole thing is actually quite a pain.

Happy Xmas setting up your system.
