Asynchronous adaptive USB Audio device

Since the subject of USB sound cards and DACs seem a hot topic on this list I want to bring the attention to some interesting device in the Creative Labs portfolio. We have discussed the disadvantage of having to estimate the audio clock from isochronous USB audio devices at length in the past and this device got it right!

The Audigy 2NX external sound card looks like many similar devices in this segment. What sets it apart from all the devices that have been discussed here is the fact that is is implementing the asynchronous adaptive mode of the USB audio spec.

This mode basically turns the clock on the external device into the master clock for the playback and uses flow control over the USB bus to pull data from the PC at the rate it is consumed.

This is exactly the way professional DACs work except that you do not need a secondary word clock cable from the DAC to the sound card and the street price of this unit is $85!

This should get the creative juices of some of the modders on this forum going!

Cheers

Thomas
