I should point out that I have no idea how the Audigy 2NX actually sounds. The key point about it is the fact that it implements the adaptive mode. This mode has the promise of highest audio quality since it allows the DAC to be master clock.
This could be either the DAC chip on this device or even an external professional DAC if you manage to synchronize this unit via the digital input.
I don't know exactly how the airport express works but to my knowledge the audigy 2NX is the first widely available USB audio DAC that implements this mode.
For the modders on this forum this means that instead of adding various expensive circuitry to deal with the deficiencies of isochronous USB audio solutions they can now focus on adding a really high quality DAC and analog stage to the 2NX or work on adding a wordclock input to interface with a professional DAC via S/PDIF.
The only other USB DAC that I know of that has word clock input is the UA1000 from Edirol which goes for around $800.
Cheers
Thomas
