Bill,I’ve done what you suggested with the horn entrance. I agree it helped throat distortion if driven hard, which is in the home environment is never for me. I do notice the discontinuity in sound when you start with a certain flare rate (i.e. the machined throat of the potted comp drivers) and then switch to a drastically faster flare rate. (you've read the JBL technical note, volume 1, number 21 about the Optimized Aperture horns and driver?)It has always kind of been a battle between good continuity and beaming for me. You can make the horn large enough that the flare difference between the driver’s throat and the horn’s throat are not so drastic, but the horn begins to beam too early. Then you back off the horn size to reduce beaming and then you can start to hear the discontinuity again! Ain’t life a bitch sometimes?
