RE: Burning Man Sound?

"In that case perhaps a square symmetrical horn would be better than a 'half horn'. You'll still get some proximity gain from the ground being near. Also, it avoids the need for a flat panel on the bottom. A curved panel is much much stiffer than a flat panel. Either way could be made to work though. Is this for burning man?"

Thanks for the advice. You are right, I think a square symmetrical horn is going to be the way, the stiffness is a good point.
No, sadly it is not, I am from Germany and burning man is sooooo far away. I often wish I lived in the states for a couple of reasons, this being one of the many.
I have to go there though. I just have to be able to afford the flights.
The unit is for insane street / nature happenings of many kinds. It is supposed to be a statement for the love of music and freedom. It's also a unit for intervention.
Built a couple before, but never fully horn-loaded.

"Length was about 15 feet. Mouth area was about 68 square feet. Response was down to below 20hz (measured), though it was theoretically a 30hz horn. The compression chamber was vented into the throat of the horn, which no doubt helped the low end."

wow, that is HUGE. it must have sounded amazing. Venting into the horn? Crazy stuff. I read somewhere that for the specific design they were talking about compression chamber output would render the port's output useless but I guess that totally depends on implementation. AkAbak is still something I have to learn.

"Incidentally, a really big horn like this is highly directional - bass included. You could have big fun with something on wheels that can be pointed at people."

yeah, all kinds of fun ^^ but really all the way down? I thought there was no real "direction" for sub-100Hz?

"Using torsion box construction (2"x4"s on 12" centers, with 1/2" plywood skins) should be plenty strong to be able to move it around."

thanks, torsion box design is totally decided on! ^^
