RE: 18" bass for OB

It seems that these drivers have less than 4 mm of x-max, is that right (I think I found some specs for them)? They definitely are not OB woofers and I imagine that you are driving these woofers into very high levels of distortion when trying to reproduce bass down to 20hz. They just are not designed to move that much.

My 18 inch drivers are Avalanche 18s with 27 mm of xmax (XBL2 technology), and I couple them with another set of 15 inch woofers with probably something like 10 mm of xmax (both drivers have a qts of around 0.4). Even with this set of drivers, I found it silly to go the OB route. Note that my equivalent baffle width is 60 inches (I bolt a 18 inch deep open back box on the back of W style open baffle woofer boxes).

I understand your desire about not using small boxes for your woofers. What I intend to do when I build a large dedicated audio room is to build an infinate baffle system, where the "box" is the size of a small room, thus eliminating the backpressure associated with a much smaller box, but at the same time eliminating the large cancellation that occurs with open baffle systems.

You can achieve a flatter frequency response with woofers which have a much higher qts, but I believe that you give up the better sound quality from the much better damping associated with lower qts drivers.
