Dear Mr. R.L. McConnell & Fellow Asylum Inmates,You replied:
"You strike me as the sort of fellow who when asked for the time will proceed to explain how the watch was made."
Not usually but in this case you are pontificating on a subject near and dear to my heart. For examples of my work in digital audio see:

and
http://www.audiocraftersguild.com/RnD/RandD.htm" "Alpha male posturing"?? Cur dogs running away with their tails between their legs would be more accurate."
Oh, I see so by refusing your challenge to drop everything and come out to prove ourselves us "cur dogs" loose by default and you win. I must have been mistaken because that does not seem at all like alpha male posturing.
"Reputations remain intact and the tiny industry we call "high end" preserved by reducing audio to the following convenient formula: "SACD sounds best because I say so and don't you dare ask me to prove it." My point is not difficult to grasp: I'd like to see one individual differentiate - blind - between the two formats. My buddy Ted has invited me to Seattle for that purpose. Inasmuch as we have a corporate account there, he will be given the opportunity this summer. I'm buying lunch and beer. Well, my company is."
Please you are making me nostalgic for my days on the corporate doll, ah the expense account lunch those were the days. I picked up my electronic chops working at the R&D lab of one of the big ten oil companies until we were merged out of existence. Our group did four generations of seismic data recording systems. The controlled experiments needed to make our instruments survive ranged from freezing them at -40 to three foot drop tests per mil-specs after which they had to record 1-200 Hz seismic signals with 130 dB dynamic range.
It is that experience which led me to begin fleshing out what it will take to scientifically and conclusively " see one individual differentiate - blind - between the two formats". When you and Ted sit down after lunch and beer this summer if you run an informal test, just playing some disks and listening, what have you proved? To rise to the standard you demand requires a controlled experiment carefully planned and executed. I look forward to reading your results.
"Do you really have four oscilloscopes?"
My babies? Oh yes indeed! Three Teks and a Nicolet:
Tektronix 7704A 400MHz mainframe and plug-ins (seen peeking into picture above)
Tektronix 475A portable/bench (my workhorse)
Sony/Tektronix 335 portable AC/DC
Nicolet 320 5nS/sample digital storage oscilloscope
happy listeningNorman Tracy
