John Atkinson's other "musings" regarding SACD....

66.171.42.188

Let me preface this post by stating the obvious: John Atkinson's opinion of SACD matters not a bit to me. Also, I haven't read many of the below posts, so forgive me if someone has already provided some of Atkinson's other comments on SACD below. Finally, I note that the below quotes do not necessarily contradict the quote in the "root" post: they simply tend to suggest that Atkinson's glib, "one-off," two-dimensional observations don't speak to his perhaps more complicated views on the subject.

Now, enough of Regmac and Atkinson bozo-ing up this joint:

Dec. 2003 Stereophile, p. 104
"These discs revealed something I have been musing about for a while: that the SACD encoding used on SACD gets the instrumental tonal colors right in a way that, while not unknown with CD, seems fragile, with more of a chance of becoming diluted. The odd thing is that this benefit was apparent even with an SACD mastered from PCM...."

p. 105
"As a CD player, the XA9000 was no slouch... With the Optional filter, the natural, unforced quality of the Sony's vocal reproduction was evident on CD, though not to quite the same extent as with SACD."
