Zinc is cheap, but is not easy to machine. Casts pretty nice and I recommend not putting threads into it, but of course I think some auto makers do it anyway.
If you ever want to see expensive screws, look at the ones they use in your jaw for implants or other prosthesis.
Many tings vary in price not based on the material cost. Say you want a reliable gun made out of cast iron. Hell the stuff some 3D printers use it better than that. On those I wonder how they deal with initial cylinder pressure, in plastic ?
But plastics have gotten good. There are car engines with a plastic block and ceramic cylinder sleeves. Some can handle really high temperatures.
