Ric, my sincere apologies for playing a role in promulgating the confusion! Among other things, I'll plead that Tripath/Sony press releases sure made it sound like Sony's current generation of SACD equipment was going to be using Tripath chips. I'll try to do my part to educate people when I see the mistake recur.Wow, between the Carver Pro vs. Carver confusion, and Tripath vs. S-Master confusion, and now the S-Master vs. S-Master-Pro confusion (the latter being also a supposedly very significant distinction; see Sony's white paper. the AVD-CXXES series used S-Master, and I think the AVD-CXXXES series is using S-Master-Pro), well, I guess I just hope I have done more good than harm with this thread!
For the record,
1. Carver Professional (aka Carver Pro) is unrelated to Carver (Bob's former company). Carver Professional uses Tripath on its ZR series.
2. Sony does not use Tripath at this time on its home gear, but may use it on car gear.
3. Some still-available Sony home gear used the S-Master chip; some soon-to-arrive gear uses the S-Master-Pro chip. Double-check before buying.
