Everytime, I am tempted to think the grass in the active camp is greener, I would swop in a friend's 4K pre-amp and realise once again that, for natural ultra- transparent sound, a well-designed passive is the way to go.I used cheap QED passives before. WHile those are transparent, they are compromised. Not all passives are good. The Audio Synthesis folks know how to do it properly.
For listeners who prefer a fatter fuller sound that is punchier through compression, they may find that even a good passive sounds too literal and not "musical" enough. I'd say that would be the fault of the recording or the other equipment, which needs the sound of an active preamp to fatten & fill up.
