Some highly regarded folks including Richard Vandersteen state that you'll get better sound if the low bass (around 80 Hz and below) is left to the subwoofer and the main speakers especially monitors never see these frequencies.
I have never A/B'ed anything so I have no direct experience. Some owners of Virtue Audio amps say that their monitors sound better when they use the built in high pass filter.
I am no expert in this area.
