I can't say how much you would have to spend to get better than the MiniMax. However, I can say that I bought the Supratek Chardonnay and find it to be better than the MiniMax in every way. It's more than 2x the cost of MiniMax. I loved the MiniMax - it's an amazing bargain and I had hours of enjoyment listening to it - but the Chardonnay has more heft to tone, better sound stage, dynamics (macro and micro), detail, depth, tonal accuracy, and the bass is more authoritative. The entire range is very balanced. The highs are not shrill or edgy but aren't rounded off either. I thought with the MiniMax in my system I always had to make a slight sacrifice in treble, bass, midrange, or overall tone depending on tubes. The Chardonnay is overall more musical, only lacking a little of the timbral detail of some other pre-amps I've heard (e.g., Joule 100).Haviland Ultraverve is supposed to be very nice and you can find them used on Audiogon for less than $2000. I was torn between the Ultraverve and Chardonnay - couldn't find a used Ultraverve so sprung for Chardonnay. Don't know how they compare but I'm tremendously happy.
