IMO no. But that would depend on the sort of sound you are looking for. An SET will never demonstrate the full dynamic capability of the speaker. I had a set for about a month. My 65watt P-P amps did not get the job done. I ended up using a 200watt Mark Levinson amp.If I had gone with the 989 I would want at least a good solid 200watts behind the speaker. I like to listen to very dynamic music and at very high levels. Not all the time, but when the Harry James hits the platter, the speaker had better be able to cook! An SET, no matter how fine, is no going to get the job done for me.
If your tastes run more towards small scale classical or jazz then perhaps.
