There's another issue as well -- because they excite fewer room modes, dipoles are more accurate reproducers in a real room. The bass is smoother and more realistic.
You can achieve the same thing by using four properly placed monopole woofers, but that isn't practical for most people.
Of course monopoles have their advantages -- small, do great chest thumps -- and this has apparently been a winning combination for ML. Hell, I wouldn't even argue with it. Some people would rather have chest slam than realism. to each his own.
