AXPONA 2023

Visting the secret Magnepan room once again, at the AXPONA show was truly a different experience this time. As Wendell was up to his usual unconventional way's, instead of Magnepan speakers doing the main duties, Martin Logan's Electro Static speakers with their woofers removed. Were playing with an assist from Magnepan's UBS (Ultrawide Bass System), and it was totally seamless.

I'll include a video from CoolCleveland to let Wendell explain why he wanted to do it this way. When I first entered the room with two other gentleman, I asked Wendell if he really wanted me in the room at that moment as Michael Fremmer was in the next room. And about a half second later Michael was standing right there, with his camera rig and microphone setup.

So Michael working for The Absolute Sound proceeded to interview Wendell about was going on, so that was kinda of interesting to watch. When he left another audio reviewer Jana Dagdagdan of EARSPACE youtube channel, she came in and listened to what Wendell was up to this year.

After she left Wendell gave me and the other two gentlemen a longer and more complete version of what he trying to achieve. The Martin Logan's and the Magnepan UBS sounded great even in that tiny hotel room, the bass was very dynamic, could play low, and the sound was never boomy. Wendell's orchestral selection's did an awesome job of trying to recreate a symphony hall.

However I know the other question's Asylum fans have, when will it see a production date, what is the exact price? I have no idea on the first, Wendell was rather evasive on that one, as to price it being a premium product look to around $4k. Pricey I know but it is designed to go another premium product the mythical 30.7c. Also will it be sold as a stand alone product, I believe so but at that price point it's not meant for the LRS+ or my MiniMags as Wendell told me.

There was also a second Magnepan room, that Mick and Eric Norgaarden were running with the LRS+ also a 3.7i this room was open to the public and was one of the first rooms I attended. The LRS+ was sounding great to me, however I was pumped up and ready to hit a bunch of other rooms. I got to the show a little late on Friday and was rushing myself to catch up, I truly regret not going back and listening more. Also I heard they switched out to 3.7i at some point so I missed that too. So yeah I kinda fudged that part of my AXPONA trip up.
