The best Acoustats were the Spectra series where the panels were electrically divided into narrower strips as the frequency went up. This meant that the highs came only from the middle of one of the panels, the mids from one panel and the bass from both panels (on my Spectra 2200, which had 2 panels side-by-side). For my Spectra 4400s, which were 4 panels total (essentially the 2+2) it was a similar electrical layout.
This worked, IMO, better than any kind of curvature strategy (even the SoundLab strategy of having flat cells but overall curvature) because it allows for more unconstrained panel movement and therefore bigger dynamics and bass.
BTW, I also had the 1+1 (my first Acoustats in fact) and the Spectra 2200 (same number of panels but side-by-side) had less beaming and better bass and headroom (could be better transformers for that...bass could have been the wider panel).
