I just recieved my new pair of 3.7's this past Friday and they only have about 20-30 hours on them so far but sound incredible already.
I am replacing 1.6 qr's in my system and the improvement is astounding.
I have a panamax line conditioner/surge protector that all of my audio and video gear is connected through which has 2 digital meters on the front of it. One is line voltage and the other is the amperage being drawn. My audio gear consists of an old but nice classe dr6 preamp and an innersound esl300 amp which provides 600 watts per channel into 4 ohms of clean high current power.
With the 1.6's in the system over the past 1.5 years with this amp being used I never saw any amperage fluctuations when playing music at any volume level. Now that the 3.7's are in place I get large amperage spikes on the meter at moderate volume levels when bass notes play in music passages. At lower volume levels this is not very noticeable. Most of the time the system is drawing about 1.5 amps, but at the moderate levels as bass notes hit it will spike to 2.2- 2.6 amps. These 3.7's are really sucking up huge current from the amp at moderate volume levels. Also the amp after running moderate volume for 20-30 minutes while not being hot, gets a lot warmer to the touch than it ever did at any volume level using the 1.6 speakers.
After these observations I know that the 3.7 speakers are VERY power hungry at louder volume levels and I would suspect that you are having some sort of thermal shutdown in your amp (probably built in protection) because these speakers are working it so hard.I have not had any shutdown issues with my system, but I do not listen at any more than moderate levels.
My speakers are still brand new and I will watch them over the next few months to see if they use a little less current as they loosen up during breakin, but if not then the old suggestion of needing a very large high current amp to drive maggies to any where near their potential is more true than ever.
