When 2 'waves' are in phase, the amplitude ADDS.
When 2 'waves' are OUT of phase, they subtract.
Look at ocean 'rogue' waves. a couple 30 or 40 footers get 'in phase' for a mile or so and you've got a 100 foot tall ship wrecker. I've seen a photo of BLUE water coming over the bow of an aircraft carrier. Unless you've been on a carrier, you wouldn't believe how far out of the water the bow is.
I'll bet the SMG driver polarity swapped when they changed crossover. Out of phase for the 1st/2nd order to IN phase for the 1st/1st.
Too much is never enough
