I received the Cascade stuff late today. Tonight I'll be cutting the strips for the first set of tests tomorrow (Sunday).
The day was spent enjoying music while selecting the main test pieces. The selection below should give me a good idea of how well details hold under strong orchestral and/or choral pressure.
Group 1 - All these discs only began to sound impressive after I started using the pseudo-frames last year. Before that, detail was easily lost in intensive passages and the bass was progressively muddled as the volume increased...drowning other things along the way.
- Selections 1 & 3 (Allegro & Allegro agitato) Gershwin Piano Concerto in F, (Nakamatsu-piano) "George Gershwin" disc, Jeff Tyzik, Harmonia Mundi SACD
- Selection 1 (Star Trek) from the "Film Music ofJerry Goldsmith", Jerry conducts, Telarc SACD
- Selection 1 (O Fortuna) from Orff "Carmina Burana" disc, Runnicles, Telarc SACD
- Selection 2 (Zing Went The strings...) "Nice N' Easy Celebrating Sinatra" disc, Kunzel, Telarc SACD
- Selection 6 (Festival Coronation March) Tchaikovsky, "1812 Overture" disc, Kunzel, Telarc SACD
- Selection 3 (Chao Chao Ch'Boogie) The Manhattan Transfer, "Got Swing" disc, Kunzel, Telarc SACD
- Selection 1 (Main title King Kong) Max Steiner, "Vintage Cinema" disc, Kunzel, Telarc SACD
Group 2 is an ecclectic mix of jazz, classical and singers CDs that form part of the core evaluation set I've had since I got my MMGs. In most cases, Group 2 is less intensive in overall "sound pressure". However, it still should reveal if the damping material is helping (or hurting) something by bringing in a wider range of known attributes. (In most cases, I only need to sample the first minute of each selection in Group 2)
The plan:
1. with Group 1 only, run an "ear refresher" session with the MMGs as they are, (p-framed)
2. Then, take off the P-frames and
3. add the Cascade damping ONLY to the inner frame around the Mylar.
4. Listen to Group 1 again, then
5. listen to Group 2.
6. after this, I'll add the P-frames again and do 4 & 5 all over.
I'll have something, hopefully good, to post after this, on Sunday evening.
