what is your opinion of target colored vinyl exclusives? I am not a collector so sound quality is my priority, not colored variants.

was just about to buy some buy two get three albums at target, but they were all in colored vinyl , so I deleted them from my on line cart. yet the desire still burns.

Not a color vinyl fan but I will when it is appropriate usually an album title like Bloodletting (Concrete Blonde) and Red (Black Uhuru). Usually though I buy black vinyl if I have a choice - sometimes I don't so there's plenty in my set. A Walmart or Target special edition is something I would avoid regardless of vinyl color.

Long time back I always felt like they were subpar with lots of fill issues causing ticks, pops and such. The last several years though the quality seems just fine. Pressing quality in general seems to have gotten better since vinyl was re-discovered.

20 years ago, colored vinyl was a death sentence for sound quality. Today, most are as good if not better than the black versions.

I have quite a few Target & Walmart & Indie exclusive colored versions and most are exceptional.

I own the tricolor Legend Bob Marley and it looks great & sounds good nt, posted on March 26, 2025 at 08:58:48

My single color vinyl sounds great. I don't own any fancy swirled vinyl so I can't comment on those.

I own two vinyl picture discs which are a step down sound-wise compared to black or colored vinyl.

I have a lot of coloured vinyl collected over the last few decades including marbled, metallic and fluorescent variants.

These days, coloured vinyl (particularly the clear variants) sounds just as clean and quiet as black so it doesn't really matter. However, the metallic and fluorescent variants should be avoided even today (and this is from the vinyl pressing plants recommendations as well as my experience), but then sometimes you don't get a choice if you want a particular record!

I'm not a fan of clear vinyl from a usability perspective - it is harder to see the rills between tracks for cueing! Also, the clear colour makes it hard to see surface blemishes - an issue mainly if you are buying second hand.
