In Reply to: RE: What would a McIntosh C26 with some rack rash be worth? posted by BillH on June 02, 2022 at 11:41:44
The C26 was a "nice" preamp for it's day. But that day was when people were trying to move away from tubes.
I've had two C26's. They look nice, sound nice and have a real retro sense about them. But even by the 70's standards they were not a hot performer.
If you're a Mac aficionado then you need one in your collections. Otherwise if it's for Hifi then consider a more recent Mac.
Follow Ups:
It would be for nostalgia, as it was the first Mac preamp I encountered when I was a retail monkey at a stereo store for a year in 1970, The C28 was new and rather quirky--always in the shop. I can't afford a C28 for nostalgia, and this one is local. So what's it worth?
If it's something you want for more than expecting an "audiophile experience" then that's perfect. Those are wonderful nostalgic pieces that are some of the gems of their era.
Go for it and enjoy.
I would keep looking over at AudioClassics. They carry a lot of Mac gear and are very dependable. For something of that vintage level you do want some guarantees and protection. But yes, you're going to drop a grand on it.
Thanks, Charles. A sensible answer.
The Audiogon Blue Book lists the sale of only a single C28 for $1100 in vintage preamps.
