The 12AU7 and 5814 are pretty much the same. Minor value differences.
So, if your amp can't use 12AU7's..it can't use 5814s either.
12AU7, 5814, 7316, ECC82, 6670, 7489, 7730, CV4003 comprise this family.

I am unaware of a 6670 tube. I think the mention of the 6670 here is a typo. The 6680 is a 12AU7/ECC82 equivalent.
It's not a typo.
Look it up.
Howdy JSTRM. That's interesting. Before posting this I thought to see what a 6670 is. I went to Tubeworld's website. They list about everything but no 6670's. I also tried Frank's Data Sheets website and also found no mention of this tube type. Wondering what source you used that describes 6670's? Thanks.
OK this is getting more mysterious by the second. I thought I was correcting an understandable typo. And researched and found no mention of a 6670 in Frank's Data Sheets website (which is a fairly inclusive resource of datasheets for most all tubes) prior to mentioning what I thus assumed was a typo. Also nothing in the RCA Receiving Manual.
Joe's Tube Lore lacks mention of 6670's. An Internet search turns up a book about tubes titled Tube Lore so presume this is the mentioned source about 6670's. If so it may be the author mistyped 6680 as 6670 as via google and other searches I found but a few mentions of 6670's which but stated they were substitutes for 12AU7's. Seems odd that 6670 datasheets seem no where to be found.
All this is no big deal but it would be nice if there was a relatively unknown and likely inexpensive tube equivalent to 12AU7's. Does anyone have a datasheet for or can provide a weblink for one? Thank you!
George Fathauer in his book "Electron Tube Locator" lists the 6670 as a 12AU7 type but lists only "various sources" as his reference.
I've used the GE 6680. Think it's a selected 12AU7 for low-noise. Tone-wise = blah. I have not heard or seen a 6670.As for tone... the CBS-Hytron 5418A and 7316 are my standards, as US tubes. Philips, S/H, Valvo E82CC or TFK ECC802S, as European made tubes.
Rare 12AU7 variant is the CBS-Hytron 7318. Wish I had stocked up on a few more sleeves, 20 years ago. 8^(

should be able to use those?correction: could he use those!
I do see from the answer below it's a NO. Thanks

I've used 7730 and 6189 --- IIRC, nothing special, tone wise. I only look for good 5814A and 7316, in all-numbered 12AU7 sub-types.

Thanks.
Clarification: My amp guru said that the 5814 requires slightly more current draw than the 12au7; the amp is designed for the 12au7's draw and not the 5814's.
Any ideas about this particular tube?
If the extra .025 Ampere filament current will somehow damage or disrupt the function of your device you definitely need a new amp "guru."
Almost all manufacturers or techs on all levels, will step away from saying a replacement product is ok --- if it doesn't meet exact same OEM standards. If the unit fails for other reasons, it's hard for the manufacturer or tech to deny a warranty, if he said it's ok to use a replacement part. Even if the real problem is not related to that part.
"Well, you said it's ok to use it. After I replaced the part, the unit doesn't work. You fix it."

Exactly: the point is that the 5814 along with the 6201 are standard 12AU7 types and never should have been excluded from use in the product to begin with.
The 6201 is not a standard 12AU7 type. It is the "industrial" version of the 12AT7.
