I am right on the verge of cancelling Roon, as I am totally sick of their idiotic software update process. Every time they change the software, this happens. Automatic update never works. Manual download never works. Nothing will cause the core to update. Roon remote on the iPad will not update and will not connect to the Core. I have deleted and reinstalled Core and Remote, and the Remote still will not connect to the Core. It just tells me to retry.
I like the Roon functionality, but their update process is garbage, and their (non)support is worthless. Nothing they suggest helps, or in some cases, even makes sense.
Unless Abe or someone has a suggestion, I am one click away from cancelling. Life is too short to put up with this rubbish.
Sorry to vent!

Sorry you're having these problems, usually user error.I've been running Roon with a Roon Nucleus+ for over three years over an optimized network and never an issue.

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with Roon updates. It's going to be hard for anyone to troubleshoot without detailed info on your system, and this is probably not the place for it. However, based on the brief description you gave it does sound like some kind of network or firewall issue as suggested.
I agree that Roon's "crowdsource" approach to tech support can be frustrating, but you will get more informed help from that community than here. It's much like here on this Asylum: there are some knowledgeable people but you have to be willing to parse through a lot of noisy BS to get to what is useful.
I've been a Roon lifer since 2015 so have been through countless patches and upgrades with almost no issues. I did once experience a problem that resembles yours. As you know, when a patch is available it gets pushed to every device running Roon on the LAN. One time a couple of years ago the auto-installs got out of sequence - a different build was running on the Core than the controllers, and they would not talk to each other. The solution was to uninstall Roon on the controllers, download and run a manual update on the Core, then reinstall on each controller. Honestly, it was easier than it sounds once I figured out the problem. It sounds like maybe you have tried that already, so this may not be relevant but I thought I'd share my experience.
My suggestion is to go back to the Roon community support forum with a detailed account of the issue and your troubleshooting history and try to be patient. I think Roon is brilliant, but one size never fits all.

Excellent advice. I've also had no issues updating on numerous platforms since 2015.

I think Cut-Throat is on the right track with networking and I might add that a security feature in your router or PC network settings could be interfering but it's hard to say. When in doubt reboot everything including your Wifi / Router / Modem / PC.... but no guarantees.I doubt that it's Roon's "idiotic software update process". I've never run into this and a couple other Roon users here have never mentioned it.
My Roon updates fine whether I set it to automatic or manual. Never had an update issue with it since I started using Roon several years ago.

Or do you have super fast, reliable ALL Ethernet connected devices and all other internet upgrades work flawlessly?
Concur, never had any issues updating. There are many possibilities in the network infrastructure.
...he managed to get through it. Not sure what he did or if he just 'messed with it' and hit upon a solution never really figuring out the root cause.I agree. It is likely to be networking and/or network security related and that could even mean / firewall / port settings in his Wifi Router / VLAN but he's probably not running a VLAN. And PC security settings. I like to keep my home network 'flat' and simple.

Abe, are correct: the same thing occurred the last time Roon did a software update. To be clear, I love the Roon functionality. My problem is their update process and lack of support. What fixed it last time and this time was repeatedly deleting and reinstalling the Core and Remote. Suddenly. poof! and it works. Roon was no help at all.
I find it very hard to believe that it is a network problem. I have 1Gb fiber and my router is new and top rated by Wirecutter. Everything in the house hums along with nary a problem. We can have three TVs streaming 4K movies with no hiccups. With every other device, whether TV. streamer, or whatever, the update process is painless. You click OK, it downloads, and 5 minutes later you are done. Not Roon.
There is no point in belaboring this. I appreciate the people who responded respectfully and politely. Some of the othes, not so much. Thanks again.
Hey Jim,
I'm pleased to hear that you got Roon updated and under control. I hope you are enjoying some great music.
I went over to the Roon suppport site to try to find the history about your issues with Roon software updates but couldn't find you over there. What is your user name that I could search on?
I ask because Roon support suggests that folks who are having problems should include a detailed description of their system and network components. Roon has a suggested template in the FAQs for what info to include. Link below. I thought I might be able to help if could get some context.
As I said in a previous reply, it is an unusual approach that Roon takes - making tech support tickets open to public view - and the result is that you can get some well-intentioned but misguided advice mixed in with the "official" responses. But there really are some experienced, helpful people over there. Separating the wheat from the chaff can be challenging.

Thanks! I appreciate your response.
...but again I don't think the problem is with Roon software as others and myself never seem to experience Roon update issues. I'm sure it can be frustrating for you but at least you have a workaround to get it going. If it's on a PC/Mac another thought came to mind. Not that it matters at this point but do you have any virus / malware monitoring software possibly blocking updates but not complete manual re-installs?

I am on a Mac. It has MalwareBytes but my understanding is that only scans when you tell it to. Unlike an antivirus. But again, nothing else has this problem.
Thanks again.
