4. I don't know. Sandoval? Maybe but I don't think so. Not Ray Vega, hell....I used him.
Follow Ups:
Nope on 4. I'll give hints as we go on but now I'm thinking no one's gonna get this one. Well, I'll give a big hint soon, but I don't think it will help.
"If people don't want to come, nothing will stop them" - Sol Hurok
sounds a lot like Bill Chase
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
'Fraid not.
Here's a hint. This guy played lead for Maynard. When you may ask? I don't know. I have about ten Maynard albums from late 50's to late 80's and this person is not on them. The tune is from the lead player's album. Actually, Maynard plays a duet with him on one cut, one of the last recordings he made.

Don Ellis! Or are you?
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
Nope. I didn't know Don played lead although he was certainly a strong player.

Wayne Bergeron

Correctamundo!

You will know the trombone for sure.

JJ, Jimmy K ......... or...........? No idea really

No sir, but I really like Jimmy Knepper's playing, one of the greats.
If I say much about him, you'll get him right away.
O.K., he's also a great big band arranger.

Bravo!
Now, for the hard part and no fair "looking it up" like SOME people.
There are two native Italian trumpet players in this list of five. But, which tunes?

....escarole and cannellini bean soup. Maybe that will stir my memory while I stir my soup.

Play your cards right and you just might become one.
Beats workin' (but not playin').

That would make me hungry except I just had buttermilk whole wheat pancakes with real Vermont maple syrup. Gotta take a union break.
BTW, the same, famous, bop pianist is on the first and third tracks.

I had thought about that also but vibrato sounds a little different, but what the hey!
I know one of them was Wayne Bergeron who ended up with his own band.
Bingo.
Very good.
Now that we've got THAT one solved, what about the other four, Mr. Knowitall?
"If people don't want to come, nothing will stop them" - Sol Hurok
.....the trumpet and tenor sound very familiar. The tenor is like an older cat and has that open and closed thing on a note down like Lester did. Those Arnett Cobb, Buddy Tate cats all do that. The trumpet player sounds younger, unless the tenor is a retro player. Don't know yet even though I listened to it quite a few times. I wish I had a magic "something" that would .......... ah, forget it.
The tenor player is authentic, but not Arnett or Buddy.
"If people don't want to come, nothing will stop them" - Sol Hurok
Didn't think it was either of them. This cat does some Illinois things.
If I give you even one clue, you'll be there.
He had a hit in the late 40's, early 50's. Every sax player that had a gig back then and even later, played it. Hell, even I played it and I was not so good.
O.K., I've given away the farm.

Jimmy Forrest, who was on my short list for a guess. I heard him with Sweets Edison when they had a quintet....that's when I first heard Centerpiece which was their theme song. Gee, that was a long time ago.
I looked up the trumpet player (sounds like a flugelhorn) and it is Waymon Reed. I never would have guessed that. I completely forgot about him. Was a pretty good player but died pretty young from cancer.
Tsk, tsk.

Did you play the beginning of Forrest's solo also? I only did about 4 bars.
Hard to remember how I learned the piece in the late '50s. I don't think I learned it from the Forrest recording although looking at the wiki entry, I went to high school in Houston 54-57 and that was "Night Train" time there. Maybe it was osmosis. I 'played' it on alto anyway. I was such an original.

I also played it on alto Mr. Original. More people probably remember "Night Train" Lane than the tune he was named after. Night Train Lane and Dinah Washington, what a pair.
Although I do remember Night Train Lane, I remember Frankie Laine much clearer, you know, "Mule Train". That's my desire.

I'm not sure it's a Latin cat.
It's not and it ain't.
