If I give you even one clue, you'll be there.
He had a hit in the late 40's, early 50's. Every sax player that had a gig back then and even later, played it. Hell, even I played it and I was not so good.
O.K., I've given away the farm.

Follow Ups:
Jimmy Forrest, who was on my short list for a guess. I heard him with Sweets Edison when they had a quintet....that's when I first heard Centerpiece which was their theme song. Gee, that was a long time ago.
I looked up the trumpet player (sounds like a flugelhorn) and it is Waymon Reed. I never would have guessed that. I completely forgot about him. Was a pretty good player but died pretty young from cancer.
Tsk, tsk.

Did you play the beginning of Forrest's solo also? I only did about 4 bars.
Hard to remember how I learned the piece in the late '50s. I don't think I learned it from the Forrest recording although looking at the wiki entry, I went to high school in Houston 54-57 and that was "Night Train" time there. Maybe it was osmosis. I 'played' it on alto anyway. I was such an original.

I also played it on alto Mr. Original. More people probably remember "Night Train" Lane than the tune he was named after. Night Train Lane and Dinah Washington, what a pair.
Although I do remember Night Train Lane, I remember Frankie Laine much clearer, you know, "Mule Train". That's my desire.
