Awesome, we just started seeing them last night here. Not in full bloom yet.
Now we don't. We used to get eaten up by mosquitoes at night. Now we don't. I miss the lightning bugs.
We don't get lightning bugs or fireflies here ;-(

I've enjoyed watching them since childhood.
Your display is fabulous!
It seems like the summer heat really get them going.
I've seen a few, but I think the hatch is just beginning here.
What's really cool in the Mid South is when the dragonflies arrive. You see them in the hundreds as they flock to the sunshine. Never annoying even if you walk among them and some seem to come up and introduce themselves.

As a kid, I "collected" insects. In other words, I had an insect collection. One of the hardest bugs to get were dragonflies. You can't really "chase" them, 'cause they're quick little critters. They can turn whichever way whenever they want. So, the key is to have your net up and ready to go, and just stand still until the right moment.
Also, they're "beneficial" insects: They're predators, and eat things like mosquitoes and gnats. That's why we see them hovering/flitting over lawns - they're hunting!
:)

We are inclusive and diverse, but dissent will not be tolerated.
That's another cool insect. We don't have large swarms of dragonfly's, at least I have never seen them.
Beautiful. We have a lot of firefly's around here. Very cool bug.
Hey that's really cool. I haven't seen lightning bugs in decades.I still have a free Flickr account with some old lame photos in it. I'm investigating ways of using it to share photos privately with friends and relatives.... and to embed the pictures in forums like the Asylum as you did. I might need a paid account but I think it's pretty reasonable.

Photo hosting's sort of like religion -- a topic that can engender lively discussion ;) but Flickr, so far, has been OK by me. I did spring for a Pro account -- one of the very few such services I was happy enough to pay for (for better or worse), but I think all of the tools including private links work in a free account.
Send me a PM if you wish and I can chatter some more about the topic -- I doubt that it's of great interest to the larger group! ;)

all the best,
mrh
I have my own mycollins.net domain where I can easily FTP upload photos using Filezilla then embed into Asylum posts. I'm no longer using the domain for other things so it's quite expensive to renew and just use it for my personal photo hosting.
I experimented with Flickr and it appears to do what I want but I'm looking at Flickr Pro for other features. Thanks!
P.S. Your profile is not accepting emails but that's OK. I'm poking around Flickr and learning more about it. It's obviously geared toward photo enthusiasts. I might have questions for you at a later time.

I think the most I've ever seen at one time was over a field in rural Iowa while driving from Chicago to Estes Park. I had to get off the expressway to take pictures... it looked pretty much like the pics you've posted.Whole lotta fireflies got lucky that night.

Cool sight. I have never seen fireflies. Not a species of insect we have in my region.

thousands of mini drones all lit up!
My wife strings lights all over hell and back in our yard too, but mainly holiday season. I need another garage to store all the fake lit-up dogs, Snoopy, Woodstock, our old Golden Abby, daughter's Berner, Nephew's Boston, and a Corgi for our international kid. That may be about half of her luminous stash.

all the best,

It reminds me a trip along Mississippi river banks in Illinois and the meadows glittering with little lights. Thanks for bringing happy memories back!
