I first came across his work on Joni Mitchell's "Mingus" - really funky bass playing on The Drycleaner from Des Moines. His style perfectly suited that quirky tune

His playing on Joni Mitchell's Hejira album is sublime, extremely melodic and expressive. The great album also contains some ethereal playing by Larry Carlton.
