I had heard of the name but was unfamiliar with his music. Of course Heavy Weather has always been one of my favourite albums, but did not realize he was the bass player on it.
Recently discovered his self named debut album and his Word of Mouth recordings and can't get enough! Also learned about his storey and struggles with mental health and drugs and his tragic death.
His creation and use of a fretless bass (the legendary Bass of Doom) gives him a sound different from anyone else. A legendary musician.
Follow Ups:
Pretty much everything he ever recorded is available for listening.Such a wide range of music, LOTS of great energy and MUSICALITY
to his playing, chops without the technique overpowering the music
and some really interesting compositions and textures.Big ears, long fingers, vital spirit.
Musical interplay between Jaco and whoever he's playing with is usually top notch too.
Been a fan of his for a LONG time and always appreciated him as a great
spirit and extremely gifted and talented musician. AND an extraordinary bass player.Met him many moons ago (when this was a scarce import) and his energy was kind
and positive and, as he put it he was "doing the best I can".We are Blessed for his presence and contributions.
Enjoy the journey!

I first came across his work on Joni Mitchell's "Mingus" - really funky bass playing on The Drycleaner from Des Moines. His style perfectly suited that quirky tune

His playing on Joni Mitchell's Hejira album is sublime, extremely melodic and expressive. The great album also contains some ethereal playing by Larry Carlton.
